Monday October 28 - Thursday October 31


Thursday
๐ŸŽƒ BOO Happy Halloween!! ๐ŸŽƒ
We quickly finished our buddy art from yesterday!
This morning we did a scavenger hunt of Halloween Facts between our classroom, Mrs. Campbell's classroom and the hallway - fact sheets should be in backpacks!!
Completed 4 rounds of Halloween themed math focusing on tell time
Set off our catapults in the Hawk's Nest 
Our buddies spoiled us with a Halloween Party (including yummy snacks) we will repay the favour before winter break
Do not forget there is no school as it is a Professional Development Day for staff 



Wednesday
- Did our final literacy station rotations!
- Put our knowledge to levers to use and built catapults for our (candy) pumpkins!! - Ask your child what was a success and what was a struggle for them during this activity
- Ms. Jonasson went home sick at lunch and plans to be back tomorrow for Halloween!!
with our guest teacher....
- Did some more writing about simple machines (a bit of review time)
- went to our buddies to do some art
- had some catch up time



Tuesday
- Today was another blue day (to start the day and our first recess)
- Continued literacy stations
- Did a logic puzzle in math with a Halloween theme to it
- Finally got to go outside after lunch for recess
- Read the story Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Halloween and did some procedural writing about Halloween/Fall
- Had gym with Mr. J
- We had a much better day today!!!
Thursday is Halloween,  please be encouraged to come in your costumes!!

Monday
- Started a new round of literacy stations including: readers theatre, monster writing, halloween handwriting, non fiction research on bats and catch up work
- finished our mystery math - we know who the bad guy is...
- learned the final simple machine - levers. We took notes and did some testing in the Hawk's Nest
- Continued working on our French Halloween books. We will be sharing these with our buddies later this week

Monday October 21 - Friday October 25

Friday
- Started off with an assembly (Ms. Jonasson got to colour Mr. Wilson's hair)
- Got gym this Friday
- Went on our community walk to sketch the Rocky Mountains
- Did a craft with our buddies
- Tried to solve the mystery of the suitcase that appeared in the learning

We have been very hooked on our Math mystery this week. Lots of our resources/project ideas are bought and downloaded from a website called Teacher's Pay Teachers.
Our class has a wishlist if you wish to donate, but please do not feel obligated. Most resources cost around $4

Thursday
Field Trip forms have been sent home today. Please sign and return ASAP
- In literacy we used descriptive writing to describe a monster we made up in our imagination. We needed lots of detail and juicy words. Next step is to draw our monster following our writing and then have a friend read our writing and try to draw our monsters
- Had a fire drill and we were awesome
- Continued our math investigation - needed to us our subtraction skills!
- Explored a special site in Alberta - Drumheller and took some notes on this area


Wednesday
HEAD UP we will be going on a community walk on FRIDAY. Please make sure your child is dressed for the fall weather.
- Finished our round off our literacy stations
- Continued time to the minute with a Disney theme (accompanied by Disney music๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถ)
- We have a mystery on our hands in math! Ask your child what the mystery is, what we have had to do to solve it and some of the clues we have so far...
- Started making French books using our notes

Tuesday
- Continued our next round of literacy stations - we have a new station this week, readers theatre
- Used our French notes on numbers to complete a crossword to practice our French numbers, we will be using our notes to create a Halloween/Fall French book
- Had Music with Mrs. Smith
- Worked on wedges and inclined planes to compare and contrast the two simple machines
- Continued our pointillism artwork of our regions in Alberta
- Read a few pages in the City of Ember ask your child what happened today...

Monday
- Worked on literacy stations in the morning
- learned some Halloween words in French and added them to our notes
- Worked on measure time to the minute and did an activity feeding animals at the zoo and labeling clocks
- Went outside for gym today
- Started researching our next region in Alberta

Tuesday October 15 - Friday October 18

Friday
Began creating artwork that illustrates our research on the Rocky Mountains and Foothills regions of Alberta using pointillism - key word for our artwork.... Patience
We also learned about George Seurat and how he is a famous artist who uses the technique of pointillism... he famous painting of "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" took him two years to create
Met and read with our grade one buddies
Met with the Grade Threes in Ms. Yong's class to work on a math activity for our math afternoon!

Thursday
Finished our last round of literacy stations
Continued measuring time in 5 and 10 minute increments
Continued our novel study - ask your child what is happening
Learned two new simple machines and tried to find those simple machines outside on our playground


Wednesday
Continued our literacy stations
Did some finishing work on our lighthouses - be sure to check them out if you attend literacy night (tomorrow)
Math - continued time to 5 and 10 minute intervals and were given a challenge in the afternoon (with questions like 45 minutes past 3:20)...
Continued our research of the Foothills region in Alberta
Continued reading City of Ember today Lina and Doon were trying the decipher the message
Thanks for all the fun PJs today! It was a fun and cozy way to spend our Wednesday!


Tuesday
Coming up this week -
Literacy Night Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Our theme this year is Canada, please feel free to wear and Canadian gear or jersey that you have! 
Friday is Crazy Hat Day
TOMORROW -  PJ Day - Students won beat the teacher two weeks in a row so please dress in your favourite Pajamas 

Literacy - Started a new round of literacy stations, ask your child which two stations they completed

French - reviewed the alphabet and starting working on numbers 

Math - worked on telling time in 5 and 10 minute intervals

Social Studies - took time to discuss why learning how to research is so important. Began researching our next region in Alberta

Monday October 7 - Thursday October 10

Thursday
- Had our Thanksgiving Assembly, thanks Jenny and Daniel for being such excellent MCs
- Used laptops to further research facts about the Rocky Mountain Region of Alberta
- Did some review in math on addition and time with a Thanksgiving theme
- Tried to solve a Thanksgiving logic chart - it was tricky!
- Finished our work on Mindfulness with our buddies

Wednesday
Ms. Jonasson was away today

Tuesday
- Did a specific literacy lesson on the proper use of commas and some rules with commas in our writing
- took notes on when to use commas and fixed some sentences that were missing commas
- Continued reviewing quarter hours on our clocks and recorded time on clocks using numbers and words
- Ask your child how much money Hawkwood School raised for the Terry Fox run (it will be posted on Mr. J's blog), as well as how many choice days we won!
- Continued researching the Rocky Mountain region of Alberta using a different tool of research today
- Read the city of Ember, as me what happened when Lina ran into Lizzie and what Doon found behind the secret door...


Monday
- Began reading and analyzing a poem about being Thankful and Grateful with the Thanksgiving weekend ahead of us
- Had our first practice lock down
- Reviewed time now looking to time up to the fifteen minute mark (used terms such as quarter past and quarter to - families are encouraged to use these terms at home too)
- Started taking notes in Social Studies on the regions in Alberta - ask your child which region we started studying today and if they can tell you any interesting facts
- Don't forget it is a long weekend ahead of us, no school Friday or Monday!!
