Monday September 30 - Friday October 4

Friday 
- Today is Mental Health Friday we are preparing for our literacy night by using mindfulness in our drawing of Lighthouses
- Met with our buddies and discussed different ways to be mindful
- did some catch up work
- it was a nice, calm, peaceful day

Thursday
- Finished our final literacy rotations for the week
- Continued learning about reading time on analog clocks (where the hour hand should be, where the minute hand should be, that it can also be called "half past)
- practiced our music skills on the xylophone
- did some word work with dolche words and grade four level words on whiteboards
- students are working on finishing their geometry art project and some have begun to conference with Ms. Jonasson and show off their shape knowledge and understanding
- Today our pictures went home - photo orders are due by Oct 11

Wednesday
- Continued with literacy stations - we have a new station this week - ask me what it is and what topic we are learning about in that stations (hint, it has to do with what we are learning about in Science)
- Reviewed clocks and interacted with our clocks in our math books and showed our understanding in our duotangs
- Continued working on throwing and catching in gym with Mr. J
- Reviewed our social studies terms from Monday and recorded the definitions in our Social Studies duo tangs so we can refer to the terms throughout the year
- Learned a new simple machine and got to define it and experiment and play with it in small groups

Tuesday 
- We were so lucky to have a mom from our class in who is a cartographer to teach us all about maps and some of her work with maps - big thank you to Courtney for your expertise, the students loved it
- Started a new topic in Math - Time, ask me what an analog clock is and how many hours are in a day

Monday
- We wrote about our novel study City of Ember we were asked to review what has happened so far and make some predictions as to what we think will happen next!
- Continued our geometry art project - we will be transferring our good copies onto card stock later this week!
- Did a check in for social studies - we are reviewing some terms such as region, landforms, non-fiction, identity, geography, natural resources and renewable resources

Monday, September 23 - Friday September 27

Friday
- Many of us spent time outside this morning at our muffin breakfast, thank you to all the wonderful volunteers for putting it together
- Had our Terry Fox assembly with Dr. Kelly our special guest speaker - she has been cancer free for 35 years!!
- Braved the cold and snow and ran our Terry Fox Run! Our class ran 84 laps!!
- Helped our buddies with some fall art!
Amazing fact - look below at Hawkwood's contributions to the Terry Fox foundation below 
as a school over the past 20 years we have raised over $60 000 for cancer research!
Our class this year has raised almost $300 - donations are still welcome early next week if you missed out
Monday is ORANGE shirt Day

Thursday
- Wrapped up our final literacy stations (we were all working so hard)
- Continued working on days of the week in French

- Created a rubric to show our learning in geometry in math to make our very own art project - stay tuned, this project is going to take lots of time!
- Played Indiana Jones in gym
Money has began trickling in for the Terry Fox run. Please remember our Muffin Breakfast tomorrow! As well as our Terry Fox Assembly and run! It maybe chilly, so dress for the weather!

Wednesday
- Continued our literacy stations
- Introduced the days of the week in French
- Completed a math checkin to review the concepts of symmetry and 3D objects and their attributes tomorrow we will be moving on to a new math project!
- We are still reading City of Ember - Ask me what is happening
- Explored the bodies of water in Alberta - the link below has some fast interactive facts about the regions in Alberta

Tuesday
- Today we started literacy stations again. Ask we what stations I worked on and one success story
- Finished building nets - ask me what 3D solids I built today
- Explored the simple machine wheels and axle...

Monday
- Today we got our pictures taken - we were all here so no one missed out!
- In literacy, we worked on personal narratives. We took the chart we used last week to come up with our own stories. Ask your child to tell you what they wrote about
- Build 3D shapes in a new way today using nets - ask me what a net is
- Got to go outside for gym with Mr. J. Remember - Terry Fox run is FRIDAY - rain, shine or even snow! Please dress for the weather
- We will be collecting donations for Terry Fox - we have a school goal of raising $3000!!
- Worked on mapping the regions of Alberta using our textbooks - ask me what region Calgary is located in!

Thursday
- Please have any book orders in by Monday (you can place orders online)
- Today we finished our final literacy stations (we completed six this week)
- In math we built 3D shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks and listed their attributes (ask me what shapes we needed to build)
- built some amazing stamina reading independently
- explored fall outside with our buddies - check out the scavenger hunt we needed to try to complete
- Remember NO school tomorrow - teachers' have a PD Day

PS - Congrats - The Grade 4s were working so hard this week and being such caring citizens of Hawkwood School that they beat the teacher! Ms. Jonasson owes them a bonus movement break outside next week!!





Wednesday
- Continued with our 3rd and 4th literacy stations
- Heads up - tomorrow afternoon we will be doing a scavenger hunt across the street in the community garden. Please dress for the weather!
- Continued learning about attributes of 3D solids and were we see them in our world - tomorrow we will be building our own 3D solids
- Began discussing personal narratives. We were given a new template that will help us to organize our ideas and thoughts to plan our own personal narratives throughout the school year!
- Ask me about the story we read Owl Moon to familiarize ourselves with the template we will be using for personal narratives


Tuesday
- Looking forward to next week... Monday is Picture day - remember to bring your best smile πŸ˜€
- Friday September 27th is Muffin breakfast day - see notice that went home today

Friday, September 13th
- Got to experience Calgary Opera firsthand and hear Maria sing a couple songs for us (without even using a microphone) πŸ“’
- Reviewed some math concepts and learning from the last week (congruent and similar figures, line of symmetry, names of 2D shapes)
- Used our knowledge of symmetry to find the lines of symmetry on leaves from outside Hawkwood School and draw one half of the leave to make our image symmetrical


We had a great first FULL week of grade four! It was so nice to see so many families out for Meet the Teacher last night!
Have a fantastic weekend!



Thursday, September 12th
- Kept up with our routine of literacy stations to start our day. We did the opposite station that we worked on yesterday and read with a buddy
- Continued with symmetry - found lines of symmetry, made our own symmetrical snowflakes and completed the mirror image of an object
- Wow - it was a beautiful day outside and so we went outside to read (and run and playπŸ˜‰)
- Put on our geography hats and labeled a map of Canada - ask me to show you Alberta on a map and provinces that are close by!
- Met with our buddies

Tonight is meet the Teacher
@5:30 there is a family BBQ
@6:30 and 7:00 Ms. Jonasson will talk our families




Wednesday, September 11th

- Continued learning the literacy stations we will be using this year - ask your student which centre they worked on today (either poetry, or post office and what they did during that centre)
- Got to know our Assistant Principal a bit more (ask your child to tell you one fact about Mrs. Ernst)
- Introduced the concept of "Symmetry" in math - Where do we see symmetry? What does it mean when something is symmetrical? What is a line of symmetry?
- Worked on sounding out words with a challenging spelling test that had high school level words!
- Continued catching up on unfinished work - remember tomorrow night is Meet the Teacher @6:30!


Tuesday, September 10th

- "I can Demonstrate an understanding of congruency" 

- We explored our new science topic "Simple Machines" by seeing what kinds of simple machines we think are in Rube Goldberg's massive machine 

- Used our listening skills to follow directions and correctly complete an illustration

- Explored two new literacy stations - Non fiction and Handwriting (ask me how they work)


Monday, September 9

- Today we introduced two new literacy stations! Read to someone and laptops - ask me how each station works

- In math we checked in on our knowledge of 2D shapes and we rocked it!!

- We discussed a new topic of learning we will be completing this year, FRENCH!!

- Continued reading the City Of Ember ask me the names of some of the new characters

Today was an amazing day!

Literacy
- took our work from our rough copy of I am... and transferred it to a good copy

Math
- Reviewed the attributes of 2D Shapes

Social Studies
- Started a new unit on our Province of Alberta
- "I can identify where is Alberta located in relation to the other provinces and territories of Canada"....

For our first Wednesday of Grade Four we,

- Reviewed our 2D shapes and their attributes (sides and vertices)
- Used the sentence starter "I am" to share about ourselves
- Started a Novel Study The City of Ember 
- Reviewed our cursive writing to practice our names and brighten up the walls in our classroom

We had a BLAST today!

- Today we learned the names of the students in our class and a bit about them about them and our teacher

- Talked about our expectations in Grade Four
- Wrote to our teacher (Ms. Jonasson) about us
- Made our own name tags!
