Friday April 3rd

Hi everyone!

It was SO nice seeing so many faces yesterday on Google Meet! I am hoping we can do a weekly meeting to check in and keep in touch! Stay tuned on more information about this! I have been busy this week planning our learning week for next week with my fellow (amazing) grade four teachers!
Monday morning I will email all students an invite to our Google Classroom! Until then, take care and have a fantastic weekend!!

Monday March 30th

Hi Grade Four Families,

Please keep an eye out for an email from me this afternoon outlining some of the next steps for learning adventures. I will also be phoning families over the next couple of days to check in and respond to any questions from the email. You need to know that you are missed at school but we are really excited about what lies ahead for us, and we will be sharing details with you through this coming week. 

P.S. - Ms. Jonasson saw this beautiful rainbow on her floor of her house a few days ago! Reminded her of our light and shadow unit and made her smile thinking of all of you!!

Monday March 9th - Friday March 13th

Friday
- Worked on examining our photographs from the past with Mrs. Malbasa's class
- Had a math activity to work on with our buddies
- Got to have gym with Mr. J
- Had a low key end to the day and worked on iPads

Have a restful weekend

Thursday
- Worked on word problems using multiplication
- Watched Wonder finally with Mrs. Vroom and Ms. Malbasa's classes
- Ms. Jonasson was away in the afternoon

Don't forget to dress up as your favorite character from a book tomorrow!!


Wednesday
- Continued story work
- Did some more practice on 2 digit multiplied by 1 digit multiplication
- Worked on soccer with Mr. J
- Went outside to look for producers, consumers and decomposers


Tuesday
- We started exploring our Museo Fur Traders Kit from the Glenbow Museum - ask your child about what the first artifact we looked at was...
- Had our second day of our read-a-thon
- Started doing some more work with 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication - keep practicing your basic multiplication facts at home!
- Mr. A talked to us about Fungi
- Worked with Mrs. Wadja and examining historical pictures and thinking what we:
observe, infer and and questions we have
- Remember that tomorrow is our walk to the community gardens!
Friday is dress as your favourite character from a story!

Monday
- We are still working away at our stories! Looking forward to sharing them!
- Did another checkin with basic multiplication facts
- Read-a-thon is going on! We stopped, dropped and read as a whole school
- Talked about Biodegradable items!
- Heads up - Wednesday we will be going on a community walk! Please dress for the weather that day.

Friday
- Had some time to catch up on unfinished work for the first 30 minutes of the day
- Had an Opera Performance Assembly
- Worked with our little buddies
- Continued our Wonder Art work

A Read-a-thon package went home earlier this week... Be sure to get caught reading and start bringing in gently used books to donate!

Thursday
- Continued with a word work activity for our Wonder Art projects (that are looking AMAZING)
- Played a math game called Around the World
- This week we started soccer in gym
- Mr. Wadja worked with us in social studies - read a story and took some notes
"The earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth." - Chief Seattle
- This was an important quote we read today in our story
- In science we wrote the definitions for the terms "waste, producer, consumer, decomposer"

Wednesday
- Started writing some of the rising action in our stories
- Continued reading Wonder - we will be finishing the book soon and watching the movie next week
- Played some multiplication games in math
- Went over the natural waste cycle in science
- Started our Wonder Art Portraits
- Had gym with Mr. J

Tuesday
- We started writing the introductions of our stories. We started by reading several introductions of story books to get an idea of various ways to start a story and hook our readers
- Took some notes on multiplication strategies
- Zero the hero - any number multiplied by zero (0) is always zero (0)
- One never wins - any number multiplied by one is always that number
- Two - skip count by 2s or double the number
- Three - 3.. 6.. 9.. and 12.. 15.. 18.. 21.. 24... and 27... 30 (tune of row, row your boat)
We continued taking notes for skip counting by 4s, 5s, and 9s. We will work on the remaining number multiplication strategies another class
- Had music with Mrs. Smith
- Brainstormed kindness words about our classmates for an upcoming art project


Monday
- Today we continued brainstorming our plot diagram for our own stories
- We had time continuing to review legends that we started with Mrs. Wadja last week
- Started reviewing the concept of multiplication. Practice basic facts at home to help us out with our math in class
- Started our new science unit "Waste in our World"

Friday
- We continued our visual journal reflections on our time at WinSport
- Had a music reveal from the Opera. Our Composer and Director were both here!
- Had gym with Mr. J and worked on our parachute skills
- Worked with our Grade One buddies
- Today was Mental Health Friday - we as a school worked on Mindful Coloring

Thursday
Ms. Jonasson was away today

Wednesday 
- Worked with Mr. A on a Pink shirt day activity
- Did some more notes of classroom supplies in French
- Reviewed the rubric for problem solving we did with Mrs. Harms a couple months ago and did a practice word problem together

Tuesday
Had a beautiful last day at WinSport!!

Monday 

- Today we discussed the story element of plot. We mapped out the plot for a popular childhood story. Later this week we  will be starting to brainstorm the plot of our own stories
- Mr. Abdulghani led a lesson on Perimeter
- Did a school survey on the laptops
- Read some more of Wonder we are getting close to finishing
- Remember - tomorrow is the last day of skiing/snowboarding

Friday 
- Today we had some time on iPads to play math and literacy games
- Met with our buddies and watched the Lorax and talked about ways to take care of our world
- Had an assembly about next Wednesday which is PINK shirt day!
- Read a bit of Wonder - we are back to Auggie's perspective

Thursday
- Had another great day at the hill!!


Wednesday
- Tomorrow with skiing the weather looks beautiful. Some students may wish to take off their coats when on the hill NOTE - if they take off coats they need to have a long sleeve shirt/sweat on (arms covered) no t-shirts allowed
- Got to officially meet Mr. Abdulghani 
- Did a writing assignment with our student teacher
- Read some Wonder and worked on the character Justin
- Read I am Not a Number  and started working with Mrs. Wadja on thinking like a historian to find out what events lead to Residential Schools - we will be working on answering this question the next several weeks by looking at Alberta's history
- Met with Darin, the composer of our Opera who shared some music with us
- Went to see our buddies and they showed us their class history museum

Tuesday
Had a chilly morning at the ski hill, but a beautiful afternoon

- Today we had some extra time to finish our social studies research
- Read more of Wonder
- Decorated our Valentine's Bags and had a mini celebration!

Tuesday
- Did some literacy stations - worked on some word work and non-fiction stations
- Reviewed perimeter in math
- Had some time to finish our Buffalo research from the Glenbow Museum. About half of us still need to finish (some maybe sent home next week to get some extra time to finish up)
- Had a review checkin for Light and shadow in Science
Tomorrow we will have time to handout Valentines to classmates

The Grade 3s made these adorable Koala's to raise money for the World Wild Life Fund to support the animals who lost their homes in the Australian fires
Koalas are available to purchase for $3.50 (Ms. Jonasson already got hers!)




Monday
- Welcome to a short learning week
-Mrs. Campbell sent us an email with some pictures of her new baby Preston - he likes to sleep all day and stay awake all night!!
- We did some writing about our time skiing and snowboarding. We wrote about what we enjoyed, a challenge we were faced with and how we tried to overcome those challenges
- Did some logic puzzles for Valentines Day
- Added some terms to our science notes (concave and convex lenses)
- Continued reading Wonder we are still reading from Jack Will's perspective

Friday
- Today we had gym with Mrs. Tran's class
- Finished our groundhog math and found out who the groundhog kidnapper was
- Did a friendship tree with kind words for our buddies
- Worked with buddies on making artwork showing the Northern Lights
- Read some more of Wonder
- A list of students names was sent home today. We will have time next Wednesday to handout Valentines if students wish to give Valentines to their classmates

Ms. Jonasson was away today, but wanted to remind everyone that Thursday is Math Night!



Monday
- We planned and wrote a little bit about the setting of our stories we will be writing later this month
- Started our Groundhog Mystery Math - the math skill we needed today was multiplication
- Practiced our recorders in music
- Visited Ms. Splelay's class and explored their family artifact museum!
- Saw some videos and took some notes on different optical devices (telescope, microscopes)

FYI - SKIING IS THURSDAY!!! THE BUS WILL LEAVE AT 9:15 SO WE ASK STUDENTS BE IN CLASS AT 9:00 SO WE CAN TAKE ATTENDANCE RIGHT AWAY

Thursday 
- Today we did some paragraph writing all about our character. Ask you child to tell you about their interesting character!
- Still continuing practicing subtraction with 3 digits - used that skill to solve some riddles
- Had our final day of gratitude!
- Continued an art project with our buddies

Wednesday 
- Today we discussed the story element of "character". What it means and what makes a character exciting/engaging
- Students began brainstorming and documenting ideas on a character that they would eventually like to write about (thinking about character traits, their background, their interests, etc.)
- Continued working on 3 digit subtraction.
- Finished reading Via's perspective today in Wonder, next we will be moving onto Summer's perspective. (it is very interesting to notice how the same event is viewed from different characters perspectives so far)
- Had time to continue buffalo research in Social Studies (we are getting close to finishing)
- HEADS UP - NEXT THURSDAY IS OUR FIRST DAY OF SKIING/SNOWBOARDING
MORE INFO TO FOLLOW ON HOW THAT DAY WILL LOOK!
We are still looking for volunteers for 3 of the 4 ski days if you are available to come join us for a fun day on the slopes!!


Tuesday 
- Brainstormed character traits and what we know about Via in Wonder
- Started subtraction with 3 digit numerals
- Had 4 new science centre involving light and using terms like reflection, refraction, optical devices and more!

Monday
- Had a great guest speaker today! Ask your child her special connection to our class and what she taught us about!

Monday January 20th - Friday January 24

Monday
- We started up literacy stations again - first time in the new year! Each student completed two stations
- Read a little bit of Wonder, ask how Auggie's first day of school went
- Continued working on addition with 3 and now 4 digit numerals
- Worked on the concept of shadow and examined how moving a light source will change the shadows length
- We will be doing some science experiments OUTSIDE tomorrow, so please make sure to dress for the weather


Tuesday
- Today we made our own sundials and went out to track the shadow of a pencil crayon on a paper plate throughout the day (morning, mid day and afternoon)
- Completed the next two literacy stations
- Missed gratitude journals yesterday, so did two responses today
- Added some scientific terms to our glossary (sundial, eye, nearsighted, far sighted)
- Read some more of Wonder
Please note - tomorrow we have the mobile escape room FIRST THING - please try to be on time so you do not miss out on this awesome experience!! 

Wednesday
- Had the best time with the mobile escape room - there were four different activities - get your child to explain them all to you and which one they liked best!!
- Worked on addition with 4 digit numerals
- Got to explore the science fair
- Continued working on Social Studies research from the Glenbow museum
- Watched a Magic School Bus video about light

Thursday
- Finished our literacy stations
- Continued practicing 4 digit addition
- Started reading from Via's perspective in Wonder

Friday
- Today we had music
- did our next gratitude reflection
- We had catch up research time for Social Studies
- Met with our buddies and made some fun crafts for Chinese New Year
- Had a school wide math challenge

Friday
- Lots of our students today had auditions today for the opera!
- Reviewed the primary colours of light! Ms. Jonasson made a mistake yesterday! The primary colours of light are green, blue and red
- We got to move around in the gym today with Mr. J
- Had buddies!! Ask what we did with our little buddies

Thursday
- Our BLUE week continues. We have been making sure we take lots of brain breaks and opportunities to move around!
- We were so fortunate to have Dr. Lori Jaffray who is an optometrist and Grade Four parent in to talk to us about how our eyes work and how we can take care of our eyes. Ask your child what they learned, how they can keep their eyes safe and some other interesting hands on opportunities we had!
- We discussed light spectrum and how white light is broken up. We also learned about how reflection works and helps us to see colour!
- Students also reviewed primary and secondary colors

Wednesday
- "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind." We read this quote/precept in Wonder today and reflected in our writing journal what it means to us and why we think it is an important quote to our story
- Day 7 Gratitude - Something in our rooms we are grateful for
- Did an experiment with the terms opaque, transparent and translucent
- We defined the terms in our science glossary and added an object representing each of the terms

Tuesday 
- Further examined the character of Auggie (his feelings, thoughts, actions, likes, dislikes, what others think about him)
- Completed Day 6 of Gratitude - a subject in school we are grateful to learn
- Continued reviewing rounding and how to use rounding to help us with addition
- Some students have some extra practice to review this concept and be more comfortable and confident in their rounding skills
- Ms. Jonasson was away this afternoon


Monday
- We had 8 students away today!
- We read some more of Wonder and discussed some character traits that describe August
- Reviewed that addition strategy of estimating and rounding
- Continued buffalo research
- Learned some classroom terms in French

- Did a free writing about what we know so far about the main character in Wonder, Auggie
- Practiced some subtraction equations
- Brainstormed a T-chart of examples of artificial and natural light
- Continued doing research and note taking from the Glenbow museum website

Wednesday
- Today we wrote about some goals for 2020, where we want to go, what we want to do, what we want to read, something we can improve on
- We officially started our novel Wonder ask me what characters we have met and what has happened in the story so far...
- We continued reviewing addition strategies and practiced some addition equations
- We started some research using Glenbow museum website of the First Nations' Peoples of Alberta



Tuesday
- Welcome back! Hope everyone had a restful and joyful winter break!
- Today we started off by writing about our winter break - did some snap shot pictures and some paragraph writing
- Started a gratitude log. We will be doing this throughout January. Today - something that we are grateful to eat
- Also started a new novel study Wonder if you have this novel at home and wish to bring it in that is "wonderful" Today we just started with the story book We are all Wonders and will start the novel tomorrow
- Reviewed some addition strategies we know. We will be working on 4 digit addition and subtraction this coming month
- Kicked off our new science unit Light and Shadow we watched a video with kids who use light to put on an amazing show, did a title page for this unit and began a glossary of key words they will need to know throughout this unit

Wednesday
- Had caroling today and had a guest performance
- We have been working so hard on all our projects so we got to watch a movie as a treat!
- Had our amazing toy fair - students and staff were blown away by our amazing toys! Congratulations to everyone on a job well done
- Tomorrow we will celebrate with our buddies, reminder to please bring a snack if you can

Tuesday
- Had time to finish up our social studies and science projects and review our rubrics for the projects.
Our toy fair is tomorrow afternoon
- Finished some math with fractions and started a new logic mystery puzzle
- Got to hear Sam Effah speak! He was very inspiring and has some incredible stories


- Practiced explaining our toy for the toy fair tomorrow!
Reminder that we are doing a winter party with buddies Thursday. If you can please bring a snack for us and the buddies
Tomorrow is also sleepy Santa - PJs, Christmas sweaters or anything else festive are welcome!
We will also be doing a movie with Mrs. Campbell's class - feel free to bring an extra snack in your lunch bag tomorrow for the movie


Monday
- Had a Christmas Scavenger hunt around the school - ask your child one interesting fact that they learned
- Did our Christmas Logic puzzle
- Had parachute in gym with Mr. J
- Did some graphing in math
- Wrote to Sam Effah, he is a former Hawkwood School who is now an Olympian and runner up on Amazing Race Canada. He is coming into Hawkwood School tomorrow to share his story!
- Final day to work on our toys!
Sleepy Santa/PJ day is Wednesday!!

Friday 
- Half of us finished our toys today!
- Worked on a literacy activity with our little buddies - we were trying to solve an Elf on the Shelf mystery!
Our buddies spoiled us with bringing snacks again! If possible, please bring in snacks next Thursday for our two classes (please note that both classes have peanut allergies)
- Update - due to some conflicts, our toy fair will just be running December 18 @1:30 - 3:30
We are still collecting items and cash donations for the Calgary Food Bank

Thursday
- We are still working towards completing our Alberta Regions Poster! Several of us finished today!
- Worked with Mrs. Harms on a rubric we can use to assess how we solve word problems in math and did another word problem with her
- Got to work with the composer again in music with Mrs. Vroom's class
- Starting our procedural writing for how to build our toy and had some more building time



Wednesday
- Continued working on our Social Studies poster - they are looking great and will be coming home hopefully before winter break!
- Had our last day of inline skating! 😞
- Worked on some review of place value and base ten blocks with a holiday theme
- Had some time to catch up on work and build some more! It looks like Santa's workshop in our classroom

Tuesday
- Today we were given more time to work on our posters for our Social studies project
- We enjoyed our second day of inline skating with coach C.
- Did some math work with division facts (we discussed that brushing up on our multiplication and division facts over the winter break would be a great idea as we will be diving into these concepts in January)
- Got to build some more of our toy FYI toy fair is next week - December 18 @1:30 - 3:30 and December 19 @ 11:00 - 12:00 Please feel free to stop in to see our toys


Monday
- Continued our Social Studies Posters
- Had inline skating! If you forgot your helmet today, please bring one tomorrow
- Helped our buddies research their Calgary landmark
- Worked on learning some French holiday words and made a BINGO sheet

Thursday
- Worked on gathering our research for our Social Studies poster
- Had our second presentation from Ms. Vanessa from CPAWS
- Learned about Head Smashed in Buffalo jump - ask your child a fact they learned about this historic site
- Had another opportunity to build our toy
- Reminder - no school tomorrow - PD day for teachers

Wednesday
- Learned about our new Social Studies project about the regions of Alberta - ask your child what region their project is on
- Did some math work with multiplication and the distributive property of multiplication as a review from last year
- Read a book about Buffalo facts and did some research from our Fort Calgary kit
- Had some more time to build our toy

Tuesday
- Continued exploring our buffalo kit from Heritage Park and some of it's historical artifacts - as of today we have got to explore and examine 6 artifacts
- Worked with Mrs. Harms in math again on problem solving and different strategies we can use and what to do if/when we get stuck
- Had CPAWS in to do a presentation in the afternoon, they will be in one more time this week to work with us - check out their website and discuss ways that we can help take better care of our planet and it's water
- had time to build our Toys!

Monday
- Had some laptop time to finish our Alberta Research and our OREO writing
- Got to explore a Buffalo Kit from Fort Calgary and some special artifacts about Alberta's history. We will be working with this kit for the next two weeks
- Mrs. Campbell and Ms. Jonasson did a lesson on making the perfect WOWbutter and Jelly sandwiches focusing on instructional writing - ask your child how the lesson went!

Friday
- Did a French checkin with the days of the week, months of the year and numbers
- had another checkin with rounding using numerals and word problems
- worked with our buddies to Deck the Halls at Hawkwood School



Thursday
- Today we used the iPads to add research to the parkland region of Alberta
- Did a writing prompt about how to build a snowman and practiced our procedural writing
- Mrs. Harms was back in for math - we worked on a new problem solving question (we were all impressed how much easier problem solving gets the more we practice)
- continued comparing and ordering numbers, this time with 5 digit numerals
- had time to work on building our toy - also took time to pause and document the modifications we have made to our plans as well as how the building process is going (what worked well? what has been a challenge?)
- had a bonus video "The Snowman" at the end of the day!


Wednesday
- We had Mrs. Harms come in for math and we worked on a math word problem
- Worked on comparing and ordering 4 digit numerals
- Used textbooks to gather research on the Parkland region of Alberta - ask your child an interesting fact about the region that they learned today
- Continued building our toy - they are looking pretty fun so far!!
- Today was a BLUE day so we were lucky to have gym with Mr. J at the end of the day


Tuesday
- Many of us finished typing our OREO writing on laptops this morning
- Discussed the concept of rounding

- used a different research method (iPads) to collect information on the Boreal Forest region
- Connected with Mrs. Campbell's class to share our toy design
- Started our initial building process... stay tuned for dates for our Toy Arcade!!

Heads up - Deck the Halls is this FRIDAY as the composer for our Opera is in next week!
We will be working with our Grade One buddies to decorate a bulletin board! Please feel free to wear PJs Friday

Monday
- Typed up some of our OREO writing on the grasslands region
- finished our place value detective work and starting working on comparing and ordering numbers
- Learned the French months of the year
- Took notes on the Boreal Forest Region of Alberta
